Regio 2023: Suicide Prevention – Policy Statement of the State Associations

Suicide prevention – a a health policy task!

We believe it is urgently necessary to devote significantly more attention to the topic of suicide prevention in Germany. Every year, more than 9,000 people die by suicide in Germany. That’s almost twice as many deaths as from traffic accidents.

The fact that the number of people killed in traffic accidents has been falling for many years clearly shows the great success of the permanent further development of preventive measures.

We therefore call for suicide prevention to be made a priority health policy task.

People with severe mental illness have a significantly increased risk of dying by suicide. Only for a few is the act of suicide the result of thorough consideration and mature decision-making. Community psychiatric facilities thus have a special responsibility, which they must actively fulfill.
